Did you know there are spiritual gifts for analytical thinkers? The spiritual gift of knowledge explicitly empowers individuals to deepen their understanding of God’s workings. Using their gifts in analytical thinking can contribute to building the Church.

Unpacking the Charism of Knowledge

Knowledge is a powerful charism that allows individuals to use their analytical skills to better understand God and His creation. Whether it’s in theology, the arts, sciences, or any other area, specific subjects do not confine this charism.

People with the spiritual gift of knowledge often have a love for research, books, new information, and reading. They thrive on understanding the depths of God’s wisdom and uncovering the complexities of His creation. Developing strong analytical skills is crucial for not only reading and researching. It is also crucial for remembering and synthesizing information for a deeper understanding.

Knowledge and Wisdom

While knowledge involves pulling in and synthesizing information, wisdom focuses on using that knowledge to determine next steps. Teaching can be an aspect of knowledge, as it involves sharing information in a way that aids others’ learning, but not necessarily. Communication skills are necessary to effectively transmit knowledge, and the Holy Spirit equips those with the charism of knowledge with the necessary skills to disseminate their insights.

Serving the Larger Church

The charism of knowledge is crucial for serving the larger Church and the Body of Christ. Some individuals use their gifts of analytical thinking and knowledge to increase understanding within their specific group, while others share their insights with the wider Church. Writing can also be another charism that complements knowledge, allowing individuals to synthesize and communicate information effectively.

Furthermore, as the image of God is associated with being a giver of truth, those with the charism of knowledge strongly orient towards truth. They have a desire to illuminate and clarify things, using their gift of analytical thinking, making knowledge a common charism within academic circles. This passion drives them to understand specific questions related to health concerns or diagnoses, enabling them to accompany others on their journeys.

Finally, the charism of knowledge empowers individuals to delve deeper into the truth, understanding, and wisdom of God. It is crucial to recognize the importance of knowledge in enhancing our faith and serving the Church.

Jill Simons [00:00:00]:

Hello and welcome to Charisms for Catholics. My name is Jill Simons and I’m the executive director at Many Parts Ministries where we equip the Body of Christ by helping people learn about and discern their charisms which is really another word for spiritual gifts. When you discern your charisms you’re able to see how the Holy Spirit is already active in your life and where he is inviting you to further build the Church. Let’s dive in. We’re going to be talking about knowledge now which is a charism that empowers individuals to use their mind, study analytical skills to really synthesize information to help us better understand God and how he created things to work. So this isn’t exclusive to theological matters. This is something that can apply to the arts, the sciences just as readily as it does to theology and things related to the Church. And this is so often characterized in people that have it by a love for research, a love for books, a love for new information, a love for reading is really, really common and really building those analytical skills that help you to not just read and not just research, but actually remember and synthesize what you have learned so that you have this furthered, greater understanding of how things work.

Jill Simons [00:01:31]:

And so these are going to be your people that you tell them about a health diagnosis or a concern that you have and the next time you see them, they will have researched it and they will know all about it and they’ll have very specific questions for you about it because they have just desired to accompany you by building their knowledge of what you are going through. This is also really common in people who are in academic circles, obviously, where there’s just really that love of knowledge. And this is where we get this image of God as really this giver of Truth. These people with this knowledge charism have this huge orientation towards Truth. Coming to know the truth, coming to appreciate the truth, and being able to transmit that to other people. Now this is where we want to draw a line between knowledge and then the two other charisms that are most closely tied to it being teaching and wisdom. Someone can have any or none of those charisms, they are not always together, so you won’t always have like knowledge and teaching or wisdom and knowledge or any combination specifically of them. They can be given individually or together.

Jill Simons [00:02:55]:

But knowledge again is really about that pulling in of information and being able to synthesize what you do with information and knowledge that you’ve received is typically wisdom and teaching. So teaching is going to be about being able to share information with people in a way that really helps them learn. And wisdom is going to be looking at knowledge and saying what do we do next based on this? Where is the wisdom and what we do moving forward knowledge is separate although not unrelated to those things. Knowledge as a charism is very specifically about that research, study analytics of information so that it can be synthesized. And typically there will be whatever communication skills you need to share that with whoever you’re meant to share it with. So you might not be a classroom teacher and then it’s unlikely, or if you are not put in a position where you need to share knowledge through teaching, it’s unlikely that you would have the teaching charism. But if you are going to be the person really, let’s say in a committee or on a staff that is really the source of knowledge, you do a lot of the research and everything for that, then the Holy Spirit is also going to give you whatever communication skills are necessary to the scenario for you to be able to transmit that. Because unlike some of the other ones that are very personalized and really the forum is to mostly just stay inside yourself.

Jill Simons [00:04:38]:

Knowledge is going to be to serve the larger churches. All of them are to serve the larger Church. And so for some people, that’s going to be serving the larger Church by increasing the knowledge in your one cell of the Body of Christ for some purpose. In other situations, that’s going to be growing in knowledge to then transmit that knowledge to the larger Body of Christ for them to be able to learn something. Another great kind of add on charism to knowledge is writing. People might have a knowledge charism and then a writing charism and so there’s this call on your life to synthesize information, research and study, see new truth or share truth in a new way with people and then to do that through your writing and that being the means of communication and transmission that you’ve been given. There also might be something like pastoring or something like discernment where it’s clear that the knowledge that you are synthesizing is then to be applied through the use of these other charisms. But it’s just really beautiful the way that we see in the person of God this desire to illuminate things. And that’s a huge mark of people with this knowledge

Jill Simons [00:05:55]:

charism is this desire for the light of God to really shine through and illuminate what the Truth is. And I think that that’s something that gets kind of lost potentially in really the secular, modern view of the Church is this idea that the Church is trying to shroud things and make things dark and mysterious or confusing to kind of confuse people, dupe people, whatever the situation might be, when it couldn’t be further from the truth. The Church is really the source of light and the source of Truth in the world and it’s really everything else that is trying to dull our senses and to dull our appreciation for Truth. And so that’s why we need you knowledge people to be really steadfast in the modern age about the fact that there are things that are objectively true, there is things that we can objectively know, and that is coming directly from God. And you have a beautifully, perfectly designed mind to see and receive that in a way that allows you to supernaturally see what God is doing and how he is made present in truth that you synthesize and study.
