Introduction:

I felt deeply convicted to interrupt our regularly scheduled series on the individual charisms today on the Charisms for Catholics podcast and share a message about formulating our own response to crises. If the situation in the Middle East is the latest of many world events to impact your peace, this is for you:

In times of crisis and chaos, it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about how to respond. As Catholics, we can turn to our charisms, or spiritual gifts, to find guidance, peace, and purpose. In this interlude episode of Charisms for Catholics, we explore how our charisms play a crucial role in shaping our personal response to the world’s challenges

Seeking Peace Within:

In the midst of turmoil, the fruit of the spirit of peace offers solace and stability. Looking at the lives of saints and Christ Himself, we witness the possibility of experiencing inner peace even when surrounded by outer strife. Embracing our charisms allows us to tap into the presence of the Holy Spirit and discover how He is already active in our lives, leading us towards peace.

Detaching from Political Pressures:

While geopolitical situations may arise and capture our attention, it is essential to remember that our response should not be driven by political viewpoints or external pressures. Instead, we must focus on formulating our personal response based on the tenets of our Catholic faith. This response should be rooted in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving—spiritual practices reminiscent of the Lenten season.

Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving:

Prayer is a powerful tool to uplift the afflicted, to pray for those in power, and to seek divine intervention in resolving conflicts. We are called to discern how the Holy Spirit invites us individually to pray for peace. Additionally, fasting can be undertaken to honor the dead, the living, and to seek resolutions with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Lastly, giving alms to reputable organizations driven by Catholic social teachings is another way to alleviate suffering and extend compassion.

Navigating the Noise:

In the age of social media, there is often pressure to make public declarations or performative acts on various issues. However, as Catholics, we should resist this pressure and instead focus on the core practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. While judgment may arise from others on social media, we cannot control others’ perceptions of us. Our responsibility lies in aligning ourselves with the Holy Spirit’s invitations and acting accordingly.

Conclusion:

In times of crisis, it is crucial to rely on our charisms, spiritual gifts given to us by the Holy Spirit. By discerning how the Holy Spirit is leading us individually, we can find peace within and respond to the world’s challenges authentically. Rather than succumbing to external pressures, let us embrace prayer, fasting, and almsgiving as our primary responses. In doing so, we not only build a deeper relationship with God but also contribute to building a more peaceful and compassionate world.
